History of Bollywood – From Silent To Talkies Era

It was only in 1913 the first silent film 'Raja Hareshchandragupta' was made by Dada Saheb Phalke and it was the turning point for Indian cinema. Within a span of 17 years 200 silent movies where produced every year. In the year a feat was achieved when the talking film 'Alam Ara' was made by Ardisher Irani in 1931 and was the big hit. From this day theater came to be known as Talkies. It was always a point for the film makers to make a film that portrays the social, political and cultural issues and also suggest its solution. That is the reason why the Indian cinema always has a change in genre after a period of time. Hindi films has played an important role at the time of Indian Independence, Partition and post-partition.
