Kuchipudi- Famous Classical Dance of India

A masterpiece originated from the Southern state of Andhra Pradesh, Kuchipudi is surely one of the most admired creation in the field of performing arts. The dance derives its name from a small village called Kuchipudi where the dance is said to have originated. First scholar of Kuchipudi dance was Siddhendra Yogi who also took it to different parts of the country. He promoted Kuchipudi Dance as a dance for males only. During the time of its origin dance was not considered a very respectful profession for girls and Siddhendra Yogi did not want to enrage the society. However, with time, as the dance became more sought as a profession, Kuchipudi gained popularity among women. Today it is dominated and performed more by women than men.

The Intricacies of Kuchipudi Dance

Kuchipudi, like many other dances was once a dance devoted to god as mentioned in Natya Shastra. It was more of a duty of temple dancers than a entertainment medium. It has been only been few decades since Kuchipudi Dance has been seen as an art form. Kuchipudi is a dance drama in which scenes from Mahabharata, Ramayana and other mythological tales are enacted. This dance is an amalgamation of three forms of Abhinaya (acting) namely Nrita, Nritya and Natya. The presence of these three virtues ensures that it is a pure dance drama.

Kuchipudi is a dance that is filled with magic and surprises in its every step. It is a fast paced danced with quick movements, requiring high level of skills and timing. The footwork needs to precise so that one can maintain balance while carrying out complex yet graceful steps. There are various names given to various items of the dance. The toughest, most astounding and the most famous is called 'Tarangam'. In this, performer is required to balance on the edges of a brass plate, all while dancing. Other items that are famous are 'Sabdam', 'Bhama Kalapam' and 'Padams'.

What Accompanies The Dance Magic

Performance of a Kuchipudi dance generally starts with some dance rituals that last for few minutes. After that each performer comes to stage and introduce themselves as well as the character they are portraying. They do this with an act called Daru which is a mix of song and dance.

After this the dance starts. Kuchipudi Dance is done with Carnatic Music in the background. The songs are generally in Telugu but Sanskrit Verses are also used. The musical instruments used include Mridangam, violin, flute and a tambura.
